Concept-Based Learning

We used the book A River Ran Wild, by Lynne Cherry, to think about the concepts of form, causation, and responsibility. It is a story about an American river impacted by humans in different ways over time. We used the lenses of our special glasses to examine the story and help us answer concept questions such as; What is it like? What caused it to be this way? and How can we take responsibility?.

We later visited the Early Years campus to examine what kind of environment it was. We reflected on its function and how it was impacted by humans. We found evidence of many responsible choices.

  1. G2/3, I am sure that those glasses with the special concept lenses you all made really helped you to see the book with a different perspective. What type of impact did the humans in the book have on the river? Did they take responsibility for their actions? Could you make any connections with rivers here in Cambodia? Did what Taivan from Ms. Meagan's class, shared at team time on Friday connect in any way?

    2. My connection to the river we have to the book is that we actually throw trash to the river and we just ignore it but not always.

    3. The humans in the book don't have a good impact on the river cause they put waste in it.Two people got together to get the river clean and they took care of their responsibilitys and helped the river. Some rivers Cambodia are also very dirty because people throw their trash in it.Tavian was also talking about people throwing trash in the river so I think it is connected to the book

  2. I think they take responsibility to the river because when two people woken up while dreaming about the river, they tried to tell everyone to clean the water because its their responsibility they agree to do it.
