I made this snowflake inspired by my sister. When I came back home I saw a paper chain made by my sister, so I made a chain snowflake for Christmas Eve! It is getting close to Christmas and this is like an ornament. - ZoĆ©

Sharing the Planet - The thing I keep thinking about is...

We have learned a lot about human impact this week. What new thoughts or feelings do you have?

Saturday, October 11, 2014

Concept-Based Learning

We used the book A River Ran Wild, by Lynne Cherry, to think about the concepts of form, causation, and responsibility. It is a story about an American river impacted by humans in different ways over time. We used the lenses of our special glasses to examine the story and help us answer concept questions such as; What is it like? What caused it to be this way? and How can we take responsibility?.

We later visited the Early Years campus to examine what kind of environment it was. We reflected on its function and how it was impacted by humans. We found evidence of many responsible choices.

Sharing the Planet

This is our new unit of inquiry for Grade 2/3. We will be starting to tune in for the unit this week. Have a look at what we will be inquiring into. If any of you are experts in this field or have contacts with agencies that support the environment and living things, we would really like them to come and share their knowledge with the students. Please contact any of the Grade 2/3 teachers if you can help. We would also like to use technology to aid our inquiries, so if you have contacts/ experts in environmental systems in other countries that we could either Skype or email please let us know.

Thanks,
Ms. Teresa

Bag of Worries

As part of our exploration into the meaning of mental health, we read The Huge Bag of Worries. Then we made our own bag of worries. We learned that sharing your worries with someone is one thing you can do to help them go away.

Germs

"Nurse Alison came into our class to talk about germs. She told us that there are difference kinds of germs. Ms. Teresa sneezed glitter on us because she wanted to give us an example of how germs spread. I learned that you need to cover your mouth and nose so that you can't spread germ. Also, some germs make you sick and some do not."

What is mental health?

We are not sure yet. We know it has to do with emotions. "If you are angry you can do yoga, breathe, or meditate," Oscar said.

Health Expert

Ms. Meredith was our guest speaker. She is an expert in health because she is a nurse. We learned that kids need 10 -11 hours of sleep each night. We also learned that exercise isn't just good for our bodies. It is also good for our moods because of chemicals called endorphins that help make us happy.

Guest Speaker - Zach Bonner

Zach came to our school to teach us about taking action. He is an expert because he has been helping people since he was a little kid. Zach's advice to us was to start with what we are passionate about. Several of us decided we want to help animals.

Renewable or non-renewable

Today we had a separating game. We had to separate renewable and non-renewable resource . Our team had an argument about if the sun is renewable or not. Micah though it was non-renewable because he thought it was non-renewable. We also had an argument about water because I thought it wasn't renewable But it was kind of really non-renewable. After we looked in the i-pad for if the sand and water is renewable or not. It was both renewable. I learned an amazing fact about sand . The fact was every 6 million years the sand will increase 55 km.

Oil

Oil is a Natural Resource. It can be used to power cars. and make plastic and medicine. It can also be used to make makeup and make clothes and mats.
Oil is pumped by an oil rig it drills the ground.Drilling in the ocean is a bad because oil spill could happen and people, animals and plants could die because of oil spills.

Oil is good it can also be bad.

What the Lorax taught us

Today we started a new UOI about sharing the planet. We read a book called the lorax.  It was about a guy who was named the oncler and did not really help the invierment. The oncler was not very smart by using all the truffla trees because he did not save any. And if he did not save any then he'll not have any more to make thneeds. The oncler demanded to have the truffla trees cut down because he could then make more money. You need the thneeds because their clothes but you also want one because maybe you like them.

Our Expo

Today we had the chance to show our learning and practice persuading. We needed to get our visitors' attention and we did. Our presentation were designed well. Our images and messages had impact!

We believe we were successful in persuading our parents to take action. We gave them 3 suggestion.

Being good communicators meant we had to be knowledgeable, creative, thinkers and risk-takers. We learned we are all responsible for protecting children's rights.

Ms.Teresa's class field trip to the Kork Sao village

In Kork Sao the  schools have classes rooms stuck together until grade 4. The classes don't close their doors. We could hear all the grades learning. They were learning their time tables by chanting them. They do not have school buses like us. They also don't have fan or air conditioners. They have to bring their own water. I think we went there because our UOI is about children's rights and they have rights just like us.

UNICEF guess speaker, Mariano

What really got my attention was that some schools don't have bathroom and people need to pee out side. What I learned was that in some schools teachers don't come because they don't have a lot of money. What I still wonder is why don't save money to have bathrooms in the school.

Friends International

I learned today from Mr. James that he help the poor people who have no home. That where he work  people train people to do thing like learned to say thing. I learned sometime if poor kids ask for thing like food you do not give it because if you do they would give it to his or her mom. One thing I remember that my dad buy food and put it in to a bug for me to give to the poor people. I thing that it is good to take good care of poor people.

Today we did a sort of play. The thing we did was first took a color. The greens and reds were treated badly. They did hard work. The reds had to pick up leaves . The greens were  doing a sheet with no help no comfert not even chairs. The blues we're treated nicely. They did it with help and Pillows. This taught us about discrimination . This made me feel not special  because I was in the red group.
